Welcome to MARCHING BAND WebQuest!
We hope you will enjoy using MARCHING BAND WebQuest with your students! The WebQuest can be used in partners or independently. We recommend that teachers try the WebQuest before assigning this project to ensure that you are aware of each of the links students will be working with. Also, while we will periodically add to the WebQuest, please let us know if you find broken links because we know things change!
One excellent resource for using technology in music education is: MENC. (2003). Spotlight on Technology in the Music Classroom, Ed. E. Pontiff. Reston, VA: MENC. There are chapter titles such as One Computer and 80 Band Students, Sites for Sore Eyes, or Your Program's Very Own Web Site.
Technology Institute for Music Educators (TI:ME) http://www.ti-me.org/
The following is an overview of what students will find on each page. We call students Scavengers, just for fun, and hope that they will enjoy moving through four levels of information about marching band history, multicultural issues, band music composers, and contemporary marching and drill sites.
MARCHING BAND WebQuest – Home Page
This is our Let’s Get Started page…how to work through the modules, and remembering back to the beginnings of your interest in being in band.
Scavenger Advanced
The Advanced module of the WebQuest begins with Tin Pan Alley, African American influences on bands and marching bands, and the beginnings of 20th century music industry.
Scavenger Extreme
We may have a certain picture in our mind’s eye of what a marching band is supposed to look like. Completing the Extreme module will provide a more experienced view of how marching bands have evolved over the past 200 years.
Scavenger Master
To complete the Master module, you will get to know eight band music composers. After you review web links provided, you must answer two questions about each composer in order to complete Master level.
Scavenger Finalist!
The Finalist! module considers American modern-day marching bands and asks you to review college and university sites, get to know Dynamic Marching if you don’t already, and consider how you will get involved in music education advocacy!
Photos Blog
Students can get creative with the Photos Blog by finding interesting photos of marching bands (and marchers) to upload. Yes! You may add photos of YOUR band…even if you didn’t place. Competitions are great, but we want photos here that describe how great it is to be in marching band, not just who won!
